Setup KMS step by step – Windows 2008 R2

Install and Configure KMS server

Log onto https://www.microsoft.com/licensing/servicecenter/ and fetch KMS key.

The following table provides the details of difference KMS product key group

  1. On KMS Host, Open “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security” via Start menu -> Administrative Tools.
  2. Under Inbound Rules scroll down to “Key Management Service (TCP-In)”, right click and select enable.
  3. Run CMD with elevation
  4. Type the command where the last section is the KMS product key from the volume licensing website.

slmgr /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

5. Activate the KMS host with Microsoft, either using online activation or telephone activation:
– For online activation (Internet Access must be available), run the following command:
slmgr.vbs -ato
– For telephone activation, run the following command:
slui.exe 4

6. Reboot the machine or restart the Software Licensing service

     net stop sppsvc && net start sppsvc

  1. Optionally, by default KMS use port 1688, to change the      port number, run the following command

      slmgr.vbs /SPrt xxxx

      net stop sppsvc && net start sppsvc

Test the KMS server configuration

Test SRV record

1.     Open cmd, run

Nslookup –type=srv _vlmcs._tcp

2.     Output should be similar to the following

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.1

_vlmcs._tcp.testlab.local SRV service location:
priority = 0
weight = 0
port = 1688
svr hostname = kms.testlab.local
sccm2007.windows-noob.local internet address = 192.168.1.1

Test KMS host

  1. To query the KMS server and see its status open a command      prompt and execute the following command.

Slmgr.vbs /dli

  1. You should see output similar to below:

Installing Office KMS Host

  1. Log onto https://www.microsoft.com/licensing/servicecenter/ and fetch the key: “Office 2010 Suites and Apps KMS”

2.   Download the Office 2010 KMS Host License Pack from the Microsoft website: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=97b7b710-6831-4ce5-9ff5-fdc21fe8d965.

3.   Execute KeyManagementServiceHost.exe

4.   When prompted enter the KMS key for Office 2010. If using command, type the following    ospp.vbs /inpkey:KmsKey ospp.vbs /act

5.  Validate licenses are properly activated:

slmgr /dlv bfe7a195-4f8f-4f0b-a622-cf13c7d16864

Installing VAMT 3.0

The Windows® Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) is a collection of tools that you can use to customize, assess, and deploy Windows operating systems to new computers.

  1. Install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (this step is not mention from Microsoft)
  2. Install Microsoft .NET Framework 4 and Powershell 3.0 (included in Windows Management Framework 3.0)

  1. SQL Database is needed, you can use the SQL downloaded from ADK or use an existing SQL database
  2. Download ADK from the following website

Note: If it is an offline server with no Internet access, find a computer that has Internet access, run Windows ADK Setup; select Download the Assessment and Deployment Kit for installation on a separate computer

  1. Open the VAMT 3.0 console and you will see the small windows as below.

Type .\SQLEXPRESS (default setting for SQL express, this can be change during the SQL installation) and type in any name for database as it will create a new database when click Connect
